The choice of fish for a commercial saltwater tank depends on various factors, including the tank’s size, location, intended audience, and the expertise of the aquarium’s staff. However, some fish species are more commonly seen in commercial saltwater tanks due to their popularity and visual appeal. Keep in mind that regulations and availability can vary by region. As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, some popular fish for commercial saltwater tanks included:
1. Clownfish (Amphiprioninae): Clownfish are perhaps the most iconic saltwater aquarium fish, known for their vibrant colors and symbiotic relationships with anemones. They are relatively hardy and come in various species and color variations.
2. Tangs and Surgeonfish (Acanthuridae): Tangs are known for their striking colors and unique shapes. Some common species include the Yellow Tang, Purple Tang, and Powder Blue Tang. They are often chosen for their algae-eating abilities.
3. Angelfish (Pomacanthidae): Angelfish are prized for their elegant appearance and come in various species and color patterns. The Emperor Angelfish is particularly popular.
4. Butterflyfish (Chaetodontidae): Butterflyfish are known for their delicate and intricate patterns. The Copperband Butterflyfish and the Raccoon Butterflyfish are commonly seen in commercial setups.
5. Wrasse (Labridae): Wrasse species are diverse, and some, like the Cleaner Wrasse, are popular for their vibrant colors and cleaning behavior.
6. Damsels (Pomacentridae): Some damselfish species, such as the Domino Damsel and Blue Damselfish, are hardy and suitable for commercial tanks. They are often used for cycling new tanks.
7. Gobies (Gobiidae): Gobies are small, colorful, and come in various species. The Yellow Watchman Goby and Clown Goby are commonly chosen for their striking appearance.
8. Seahorses (Hippocampus spp.): Seahorses are unique and fascinating to observe. They require specialized care, and some commercial aquariums keep them as a draw for visitors interested in their delicate beauty.
9. Lionfish (Pterois spp.): Lionfish are striking but also invasive in some regions. They require careful management due to their predatory nature.
10. Triggerfish (Balistidae): Triggerfish are known for their distinctive appearance and behaviors. The Picasso Triggerfish and Clown Triggerfish are sometimes kept in commercial setups.
It’s essential to research the specific needs and compatibility of any fish species you intend to keep in a commercial saltwater tank. Also, be aware that the popularity of certain species may change over time as new species become available and conservation concerns influence choices. Local and international regulations regarding the collection and trade of marine species should also be followed.
